The Old Settlers’ Photo Collection was inventoried and scanned between 2003 and 2005 by Mary Nilles, Rollingstone, MN native and professor of English at New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York (Brooklyn), through support from PSC-CUNY research grants (administered by the Research Foundation of the City University of New York), and from private sources; from New York City Technical College, Brooklyn, and Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.
These grants also involved selected New York City and Winona County students and instructors in a series of teaching-learning activities, 2005-2006. Since so many of the first Old Settlers once called New York City or State their home, or passed through the port of New York on their way to the West, this project held special interest for Brooklyn, New York students, many of whom were immigrants themselves.
